Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with particular emphasis on the spine.
Chiropractors make specific adjustments to your musculoskeletal system, particularly your spine, in order to:
- Improve communication between your body and your brain (Lelic et al, Neural Plasticity, Volume 2016)
- Alleviate symptoms eg pain, stiffness
- Prevent problems
- Facilitate wellbeing.
There are many different techniques, including those that involve manipulation (cavitation of a joint to produce an audible release ie a crack or popping sound) and those that do not. Different approaches suit different people. Chiropractors also offer exercises, daily activity advice, and health and lifestyle counselling.
